I loved Rob’s story about the grizzly bear experience he had with the other family they encountered in Yellow Stone. Rob believed the bear would not harm them due to his experience and training. The other family however, believed that the bear was going to attack them. They truly believed they were going to die.
As Rob dramatically and humorously shared with us the contrasting reactions between the two group’s responses I was really struck by how our beliefs dictate how we act. As followers of Christ, we are constantly living in the tension between believing God or believing our experiences and what others tell us. This is where we really do live out whether we are walking by faith or by sight.
I believe this is one of the top reasons the River focuses on intimacy with Jesus and why we are focusing this year to grow our roots deep in the dirt of God’s word. All of this really hit home with me a few years back when I realized that I believed in God but I did not believe God. Once I realized that, things began to change in my life in areas I had longed for since childhood. As I have continued to seek to believe God my relationship with Him has grown more enjoyable and fun!
So here is my question for you to ponder and take before the Lord in prayer. Do you just believe in God or do you believe God (take Him at his word)? I challenge you to really believe Him. As you continue to read the Bible I pray that your eyes and heart will be enlightened by the truth of His word and that you would begin to see with more clarity that God is faithful to bring to fruition His spoken and written Word.
His Word will not return void! That is a good promise. We can believe in that specific verse we find that speaks right into our troubles and worries. We can draw hope when we read the stories of barren women having children, blind and leprous men being healed when there was no cure, how God cares even for the birds of the air and the flowers of the field and so much more.
Thank you God that you are a God of hope and that we can truly believe YOU!
