If you have a pulse, you have a purpose!

At The River, there are some specific phrases, concepts, and ideas that set us apart and make us us. Maybe the most widely used and known is, “if you have a pulse, you have issues.” I had a friend of mine, in exasperation, say to me, “I’m tired of hearing that. Let’s move on.” If the phrase is used as permission to wallow in self-pity, I agree with him. But that’s not the intent. The intent is to acknowledge that all of us have issue in our lives. All of us. Every single one of us. No exceptions. Thus, rendering the place this phrase is repeated a safe place for all to let their guard down and live vulnerably. If we never acknowledge that we have issues we need to deal with – we will never deal with them. And they will master and rule us. Once we acknowledge that we all have issues we then can move onto the next Riveresque phrase. “If you have a pulse, you have a purpose!”
